IS4H Bahamas Overview

Introduction to IS4H Bahamas

Overview

Information Systems for Health (IS4H) Bahamas is a transformative initiative by the Department of Public Health in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, aimed at using technology to enhance healthcare delivery, access, and outcomes nationwide. Anchored in the Caribbean-wide IS4H framework developed by PAHO/WHO and supported by the IDB, it integrates innovative digital tools and data systems to establish a modern, efficient, and patient-centred health system in The Bahamas.

Vision

To create a connected, data-driven health information ecosystem that empowers individuals, healthcare providers, and policymakers to achieve optimal health outcomes for all Bahamians.

Mission

To strengthen the Ministry of Health's capacity to lead and steward national information systems for health by fostering the collection, analysis, and utilization of data across the healthcare system. IS4H Bahamas is dedicated to supporting clinical, management, and policy decision-making while ensuring seamless interoperability among providers to achieve the vision of “one person, one record” in health.

Impact on National Health

  • Enhanced Access: The Bahamas National Patient Portal (BNPP) will allow individuals to view their health records, schedule appointments, and communicate with healthcare providers from anywhere, fostering greater control over personal health.
  • Efficiency and Integration: Platforms like BahamasEMR+ (BEMR) streamline clinical workflows and ensure that healthcare providers have timely access to accurate patient information, reducing duplication and delays.
  • Coordination of Care: Healthcare providers and administrators will also be able to use BEMR and the BNPP to manage and track patient appointments, access a centralized view of each patient's medical history, lab results, and prescriptions, collaborate with other healthcare providers by sharing and accessing patient information in real-time, and track patient progress through integrated health metrics and analytics tools available in the portal.
  • Financial Innovation: DigiPay simplifies billing and payment processes, creating a more transparent and efficient financial ecosystem within the healthcare system.
  • Prenatal Care: SIP Plus (SIP+) provides a comprehensive and centralized digital platform for managing maternal and child health data, enabling providers to track critical indicators and make evidence-based decisions.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Through tools like Metabase, policymakers and administrators can leverage real-time data to make informed decisions that address public health challenges and allocate resources effectively.
  • Patient Empowerment: By equipping citizens with user-friendly tools and access to their health information, IS4H Bahamas encourages proactive health management and engagement.
